Summary. After 3 consecutive years of poor harvest, household food security levels, especially in the target areas remains critical. This is as a result of a combination of factors, which include erratic rains, draft power shortages and poor supply of agricultural inputs. This is further compounded by poor post harvest handling practices, especially for cereals which lead to significant losses 9-15% ; thereby narrowing the window of product availability. This project seeks to improve household food security for the 2003 04 consumption year through assisting vulnerable farming households to regain and improve their existing productive capacity for agricultural production. The basic assistance basket will comprise seed of a suitable staple crop maize sorghum ; complemented with a legume soybeans sugar beans groundnuts ; best suited to the local agro-ecological conditions. Fertilisers, especially for maize, soybeans and groundnuts are also included as part of the crop pack. Seed for cereals will be adequate to plant an average of 0.6ha, which in a good year could yield enough grain to feed an average household size of 5 people with a provision of some surplus. A vegetable seed pack will also be supplied to those households with access to water for 5 irrigation purposes. Due to the high prevalence of HIV AIDS 33.7% ; in the adult population in Zimbabwe and its impact on labour productivity, low labour requiring crops e.g. sweet potatoes ; have also been included. Furthermore the project seeks to support part of the beneficiary community with repairing of ox-drawn ploughs, vaccination of draft animals against Red Water and Gall Sickness and training, particularly in post harvest handling of cereals.
