The age-old traditions and techniques of carpet making are passed from generation to generation. The creation of a carpet takes dedication and patience, as it is a difficult and time-consuming process. Each individual knot of colored wool/silk has to be created by hand to make the design, and depending on the quality and size of the rug, it may take a few months or several years to complete. Hand made carpets can have anywhere between 50 to 2500 knots per square inch, the higher the knot count the finer the carpet. The average wool carpet made in a tribal village will have 50 to 150 knots per square inch, city carpets have on average 100 to 300 knots and there are individual carpets exceeding 600 knots per square inch but they are not common since wool is a thick fiber. Silk carpets range from 100 to 2500 knots, with a finer example in 500+ knot range. The knot count can be determined in a specific area of the back of the rug, by multiplying the horizontal with the vertical knot counts.

A skilled weaver can knot approx. 6000 a day.

Below you can see the average time to knot 6x9-foot carpet of varying quality. Normally, one person would make a carpet up to 6x4 foot in size, sizes larger than that can have 3-4 or more people working on them simultaneously. Remember that these estimates do not include the time needed to prepare the wool (including clipping, carding, spinning, and dyeing), map the design (about 8 days), or to wash and clip the finished carpet (more than 15 days).
